We are a free, independent peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing service based in the Netherlands, built to protect your privacy and secure your data. Nothing is stored online—once you close your browser, all transfers end instantly. Our mission is to ensure that everyone retains complete control over their own data, exactly as it should be.
When you close the browser tab, your files instantly become unavailable, helping prevent unauthorized access. ToffeeShare relies on WebRTC peer-to-peer technology to create the most direct connection between devices—meaning that in some cases, your data might never even leave the building.
Since we don’t store any of the data, there’s no need to restrict file sizes. You’re welcome to share files of any size or quantity—just keep your own data usage in mind.
Your files can be accessed only by you and the intended recipient. All data is secured with end-to-end encryption, guaranteeing that no one else can view it. ToffeeShare uses a DTLS 1.3–based system to ensure safe and reliable file transfers.
By avoiding data storage altogether, we remove the need for large, energy-hungry servers. This means ToffeeShare consumes much less energy, resulting in a much smaller carbon footprint than traditional cloud storage services.
What began a few years ago with only a handful of daily users has now expanded into a system transferring over 50 TB of data each month!
ToffeeShare transfers files directly between devices using peer-to-peer (P2P) technology. Because the data doesn’t pass through or get stored on any server, transfers are faster and more private.
This works through WebRTC, which uses a protocol called STUN to establish a direct connection.
ToffeeShare originally started as a native app with its own STUN implementation. Once browsers supported similar technology, development moved to a WebRTC-based version. A new native app may still come in the future—contact us if you’d like a demo.
In most cases, users see speeds between 10–100 Mbit/s, though some reach up to 300 Mbit/s.
Remember that ToffeeShare essentially uploads and downloads at the same time, which can limit the maximum speed but still saves time overall compared to uploading to a server first.
Your transfer rate is limited by the slower end of the connection—either the sender’s upload or the receiver’s download speed. Additional factors include:
You can often improve performance by:
ToffeeShare can’t send folders directly because compressing them during transfer would slow everything down.
Instead, create a ZIP file of the folder first. You can find instructions in our blog post.
This usually happens for one of two reasons:
Safari loads the entire file into memory before saving it, which causes large transfers to fail.
Use Firefox or Chrome—both stream files directly to disk.
Some Android versions close background apps automatically, interrupting long downloads. Keeping the app open in the foreground usually helps. A long-term fix is in progress.
They aren’t stored at all.
ToffeeShare never saves your files on any server. If you close the sharing tab or shut down your device before the recipient finishes the download, the file becomes unavailable.
Your file is available as long as your sharing tab remains open and your device stays awake.
If your device sleeps, transfers normally resume within 5–10 seconds.
If the progress bar doesn’t move past 0%, the connection couldn’t be established.
If you’re on a phone, try switching from mobile data to Wi-Fi.
If the problem continues, please contact support.
Large downloads rely on your browser’s built-in download manager. Sometimes the download completes but the “save” dialog doesn’t appear.
Restarting the transfer usually fixes it.
If not, please reach out to us.
We update this list as more browsers are verified.
If your browser supports WebRTC (you can test using the linked tool), ToffeeShare should work. If it doesn’t, please let us know.
